15 December 2022

Heavy snow and storm warnings are in effect.

Photographed in Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture, a little after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 15.

The winter pressure pattern continues today, Thursday, the 15th, with heavy snow along the mountains of Hokuriku and Tohoku, and blizzard conditions in Hokkaido. A low pressure system will pass through tonight and tomorrow morning (Friday the 16th), so be on the lookout for locally heavy snow along the mountains in the Hokuriku and Tohoku regions.

Active snow clouds are moving in one after another from the Sea of Japan, and snow accumulation has increased significantly since yesterday from Hokkaido to Tohoku and Hokuriku.

As of 3:00 p.m., 88 cm of snow had accumulated in Hijiori, Okura Village, Yamagata Prefecture, and since only 4 cm had accumulated as of midnight yesterday, Wednesday, January 14, this means that more than 80 cm of snow has newly accumulated in about a day and a half. A heavy snow warning is now in effect for Yamagata Prefecture. In addition, 50 cm of snow has accumulated in Yuda, Nishiwaga Town, Iwate Prefecture, and 45 cm in Morimon, Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture.

Winds were also strong in Hokkaido and northern Tohoku, with maximum instantaneous wind speeds of 26.2 m/s observed in Esashi, Hokkaido, and 25.9 m/s in Hachimori, Happo Town, Akita Prefecture. The snowstorm was a blizzard, with visibility dropping to less than 300 meters in some cases as observed by rangefinders. A snow storm warning is in effect for the Rumoi, Ishikari, Goshi, Watashima, and Hiyama regions of Hokkaido, requiring caution for poor visibility.

Watch for brief strong snow tonight.

Snowfall expected before dawn on Friday the 16th.

A low pressure system is expected to develop over the Sea of Japan tonight and pass over the southern northeast by tomorrow morning. Wet snow is expected to intensify inland and along the mountains as active clouds around the low pass through.

Locally, a sharp increase in snow accumulation of nearly 10 cm per hour is expected, and there is a risk of avalanches in mountainous areas. If you are traveling by car, you must be fully equipped for snowy roads. Even if you are well equipped, please be sure not to drive unreasonably, as getting stuck can lead to major traffic disruptions.

In addition, as slightly warmer air flows into the low-pressure area, the snow will be wet and heavy, and power outages may occur due to fallen trees. You should be prepared for power outages during the night.
